  • Chew marks on wood and drywall
  • Tiny paw or tail marks in dusty corners and along baseboards
  • Agitated pets, usually dogs, when they hear or smell rodents (be careful, rodents are can be a threat to your dogs in ways they are not to cats)
  • Lingering musky odors, which will increase as the rodent population increases
  • Damaged food packages that may have been torn by rodents

With a mice and rats, you'll want to contact professional rodent control to handle the problem. However, there are a few things you can do to ensure your home has natural rodent pest control procedures in place.

  • Seal up your home and food!

-- Make sure to tightly seal all food items, including pet foods.

-- Check the outside of your home for any gaps or holes that rodents could be using to get inside. Loose mortar or other compromised areas around the foundation, doors, or windows could provide rodents easy access into your home, business, or other properties. (An adult mouse can fit through a hole the size of a dime.)

-- If your home has a chimney, make sure it has a screen or vent that can be left closed when not in use. Sealing the fireplace can also protect your home from unwelcome visitors like squirrels or birds.

  • Check for Moisture

-- Keep attics and basements ventilated and dry. Humid spaces such as these can be an inviting nesting place for rodents.

-- Repair leaky faucets or pipes.

  • Do Away With Hiding Places

-- Store firewood away from the house, instead of up against an exterior wall.

-- Keep large shrubbery trimmed back as well. Mice and rats are drawn to these small, dark hidings spaces, and can use them as cover as they transition into your home or business.
