6 Tips for Controlling Weeds in Your Yard-scape

Weeds! For homeowners trying to create a manicured-looking yard-scape, weeds can be such an eyesore, not to mention a persistent source of frustration. There are, however, several techniques you can use to control them. The experts at Waynes have composed a list of tips below.

Apply Mulch

We suggest using mulch to prevent the emergence of weeds in flower beds. A two- to three-inch layer of mulch, such as bark, pine needles, or shredded leaves prevents seeds from getting the sunlight they need to grow.

Weed Barrier

When applying a hardscape, such as gravel, pavers, or flagstones, weed fabric can help prevent weeds from getting a foothold in your pathways or patio. However, such fabric barriers may not be the best option for flower beds or gardens. For instance, the fabric can slow the penetration of some nutrients into the soil, and when weeds do manage to break through, they can be harder to pull because of the fabric.

Pull Weeds When It’s Wet

When you see weeds in your lawn or garden, think twice about pulling them right then and there. We recommend waiting until it’s wet because there’s a better chance you’ll remove the weed entirely, root and all, than if you were to try to pull them when the soil is dry.

Use a Hoe to Weed When It’s Dry

You have to use strategy when controlling weeds, and when the ground is dry, it’s best to use a hoe to get rid of weeds. Hoeing creates what many gardeners and farmers call “dust mulch,” which helps prevent new weeds from sprouting. The easiest time to hoe weeds is when they’re still small. If you wait until they’re big, their root systems will be more developed and larger, making them harder to remove.

Remove the Heads

You may not have the strength to pull weeds from the root, or you might not have the tools to hoe them out of your lawn. The next best thing you can do is cut off the heads of the weeds. They won’t be able to reseed, reducing the chances of them spreading.
